As I understand it you cannot own the copyright on AI generated work. Therefor the student is, by definition, plagiarizing. Isn't that a no no for these college instructors?
From my brief investigation, Richard, there is a lot of variation in university policy around AI generated work, and even in those institutions that do have clear policies against passing off AI written essays or code as the student's own work, policing it is very difficult.
